Pre-Sea Training Course For General Purpose Ratings

General Purpose Rating (GP Rating) course is a 6 months residential Pre-sea training that you can pursue right after completing 10th. The course is approved by DG Shipping Govt. of India and assists you in starting a career in the Merchant Navy as a Deck or Engine Rating. This program is designed to include the combined study of Deck and Engineering subjects. This course will cover all aspects of the seafaring profession (Deck and Engine), which also include swimming, physical drills, workshop training, rope and mast climbing, lifesaving appliances usage, fire fighting exercises, and ship visits etc.

After completing Pre-sea training, external examinations are conducted by Board of Examination of Seafarers (BES) under D.G Shipping (Govt of India) and successful candidates are issued an Indian CDC (Continuous Discharge Certificate) which enables one to work with Indian and International shipping companies as Trainee Ordinary Seaman, Trainee Fitter, Trainee Oiler, etc.

There is no Common Entrance Test for GP Rating. But some institutes conduct their own entrance test to select the candidates.

Course Eligibility Criteria

EDUCATIONAL ELIGIBILITY

  • 10th Pass with aggregate 40% marks in from a recognized Board with Science, Mathematics as subjects and with minimum 40% marks in English language.
  • ITI Pass from a Govt. Approved Institute with minimum 50% aggregate marks in final year and minimum 40% marks in English at 10th or Diploma Exam.

PHYSICAL ELIGIBILITY

  • Candidates should be Physically Fit for Sea Service under DG SHIPPING norms.
  • Eyesight 6/6 without any external aids.
  • No Colour Blindness

AGE LIMIT

  • Minimum age 17.5 years and maximum age 25 years on the date of commencement of course.
  • Age Limit: 27 years (A relaxation of 2 years in the upper age limit, over and above the age limit of 25 years for candidates holding a degree or a diploma is provided by DGS Training Circular no. 10 of 2019)
  • Age Limit: 30 years (A relaxation of 5 years in the upper age limit, over and above the age limit of 25 years to the candidate belonging to SC/ST of any part of the country is provided by DGS Training Circular no. 4 of 2014)

Career Opportunities

On successful completion of this Pre-Sea training, the candidates will be able to join as a 'Rating' in Indian & Foreign shipping companies as a Deck Crew or Engine Crew. There are vast job opportunities for our Indian Seamen all over the world.

Ratings are personnel who assist officers in all departments. Ratings are skilled seafarers who carry out essential tasks in the day-to-day running of the ship. A rating is also trained in fire prevention and sea survival skills. In an emergency, a rating helps to deal with hazardous incidents, for example, as a member of a fire-fighting party or fast rescue boat crew.
